I like it! Some worrisome items
By TheJackalSwitch
I have to admit before you continue reading... I bought the computer after coming back from a Macbook Pro. I absolutely loved the Macbook, but for compatibility and price (of upgrades) issues, I decided to go back to the PC. I just wanted something that would be comparable with the quickness of the Mac.I really like my Alienware laptop. I've had it for 1 month. Pros:-Keyboard/lights: Sick. Play with this, they're so fun.-Processing: It's very quick, like a Mac. I try to push it hard just for fun, and it performs remarkably well.-Solid construction. The feel is pretty solid (see "Screen" con below) I expect this to last for a very long time. The keyboard is the best keyboard I've used in years.-Speakers: Sound fantastic. I could not be happier with the sound.Cons:-Screen: The hinge is an issue, and will be in the future I'm sure. If facing the screen, the left hinge feels very weak. I plan on taking some epoxy just like the first reviewer and fixing this soon. I will say that It's pathetic that a "high-end" laptop maker would not put in some R&D to solve that problem. There are several hundred posts about this on the internet, with Dell Tech Support responses. Very disappointing.-BSD from Drivers: I've had 2 Blue Screens of Death immediately following updating my drivers. Very not happy about that. That never EVER would have happened on my Mac.-Mousepad: Lame and disappointing. Of course, coming from the Magicpad, there is nothing that could possibly compare. Gaming computers were never meant to use the mousepad anyway; you will want to buy a mouse. I personally love the Logitech mouse, because 1 USB port will link with up to 6 devices!-Fan: It's loud. I've not heard the "jet engine" that some describe, but I have heard the equivalent of the fan in my car. Which blows my mind that it would be that loud. The placement is moronic, I don't know how they expected success with no room to breath. That being said, I've not experienced any overheating because I'm careful. All in all, I'm very happy with this product. As long as I'm not screwing with anything, the laptop works well. The little gaming that I do has been satisfactory, mostly Star Wars the Old Republic and Planetside 2. All on max graphics.EDIT: I returned it. It works really well as a gaming laptop, but it's giant and VERY heavy and annoying to take places. As much as I loved it for the gaming, I only was gaming 1x a week tops, so I returned it for a ASUS Vivobook s400 i7. Same speed, but no graphics card. It looks like my gaming days are over! I can get back to my homework now :)

Do not buy DELL ...
By Chen J.
Dell's warranty is terrible. If you have any problem with your laptop, they will not help you. I owned a 14x R1. The craftsmanship of Alienware line is gone. Don't want you be the next victim. Don't believe me? Just go Google M14x hinge problem in google. You will know why. I have the hinge problem.Update 1: I try to fix the hinge problem myself, so I opened up the monitor . Both hinges are mounted to two tiny magnesium plates. The problem is, the left hinge is 2 mm thick with a big cut out in the middle, and right one is a solid 6 mm plate. The uneven force distribution is what made the hinge fail. I try to look for replacement in ebay(search M14x hinge and see it for yourself). [...] It seems like the R2 has the same design. $5 epoxy glue fixed it for me, don't know how long that last.

GREAT system, poor quality.
By Mayah
I received this as a gift, and I have to admit, I loved this computer. Being an Alienware, we always joked that it could survive a nuclear holocaust. It has survived a lot of hell from me.SO, why did I leave such a poor review? Let me give you my pros and cons.PROS:-BEAUTIFUL display. I ran everything at maximum capacity and no issue.-AMAZING soundcard/speakers. It sounded like I was playing a stereo!!-8 core processor, VERY nice. (or the one I got did)-Pretty keyboard, customizable!-Comes with the OS.-SATA. REALLY fast.CONS:-Hinge. This bad boy started having problems with the monitor flickering. It got annoying, and then the hinge broke. We had to tear into the monitor just so I can open it. It is now a parts computer.-Didn't last long. As I said before, the hinge was a major issue. It lasted about a year. AND I couldn't get support on it. I had to ask my father (who works at Dell) everything.-It doesn't play nice with other OSs. I tried to install Win. 7 Pro. and it didn't like that. At all. I asked my father what could be the problem, and he simply told me that you can't install ANY OTHER OS besides the one that comes with it.-Drivers. See above.-Internal DVD reader. This bad boy had a really good way of destroying my discs... and all I had to do was TYPE. It also didn't like to spit them out. If you do happen to buy this computer, I recommend purchasing an external DVD drive.-Small screen. Not too bad, compared to everything else.As of right now, I'm trying to find another monitor to replace the one that was destroyed by the hinge. Having a really hard time. I still do love this computer, even with the overweighing cons, and I hope to restore it to its former glory someday (with more RAM, of course. ;P)
