5Superb travel lap top
By C. Winton
I do my serious computing at home on a well-appointed desk top and when traveling need a laptop that can at least handle the kinds of work I perform with my desktop. For the past 2 years I used a Dell XPS M1330 for this purpose and came to literally loathe the machine (heavy and unreliable, with disappointing performance), which ended my respect for Dell and sent me looking elsewhere for something more to my liking. To see if I could get along with a smaller machine I first tried traveling with a $200 netbook, which I found to be simply too weak for my needs; however, I found the light weight and small size to be a major plus, so I went on the prowl for the same kind of form factor in a powerful machine, which led me eventually to the 1380T. At present there aren't many machines in this category, and from what I could tell from specs and user comments, this one is at the top of the list at the present time, which is why I bought one. There has been nothing from my experience to date to indicate otherwise and in fact, my shift to the Acer 1380T (I7 CPU) from the Dell has been like coming up for fresh air, a five star experience.I've had this unit for about a month now and to date have taken it on one serious road trip, which has demonstrated the machine is all I had hoped for, and actually a good bit more. Other reviewers have thoroughly gone through what this machine has to offer so I will limit myself to what I have found useful.1. It has handled everything I do with my desktop (something I could not say for the Dell) - let me hasten to add I don't do games, which may need a dedicated graphics card for best effect (Asus has a machine in this class that such users might consider, although why one would want to play those kinds of games on a machine this small is beyond me)2. It runs cool and has a very long battery life (my initial read is that it will easily go 8 or 9 hours when all you are doing is routine text processing kinds of stuff, about 4 times as long as the Dell)3. It is in that magic weight range of around 3 lbs and its thickness and weight are not amplified by the battery (unlike many other laptops)4. The screen is excellent (others have carped about viewing angle, but for a single user it is great, and in this size range, isn't that what matters?)5. I actually like the "chiclet" key board, which has "homing" ridges on the f and j keys that help with touch typing ... I find individual key size to actually be substantial, and touch type at least as easily on this keyboard as the one I have at home ... maybe I have a light touch, but I don't notice any keyboard flex others seem to sense6. The machine feels substantial, even with all the plastic (which I'm sure holds weight down)7. The charger does not use a proprietary input, is light, consisting of a single wall wart with a configurable plug (for which you can get alternatives for other country's outlets), configurable meaning you can position the prongs for horizontal or vertical (and it's a 2 prong non-polarized plug) - my guess is that the total travel package is a good 2 lbs under the Dell. Are there annoyances? There is the usual bloatware, but no worse than what I've experienced with other vendors ... it just means spending some time removing or disabling it. There is no optical drive, but that's a weight trade-off, and after honestly examining my usage patterns, I couldn't even remember the last time I required one on a trip. I have a perfectly good $50 Samsung external USB that works just fine for the rare occasions I have to do something with that almost outmoded technology. My one peeve with Acer is their not supplying system reinstall media, expecting users to create their own. It took 1.25 hours to produce the 4 DVDs their on board utility produces from the partition on the hard disk they have set aside with this content. My advice, start it going while you are watching TV or reading a book and just be prepared for it to take awhile. It would be nice if Acer would set this up so you could create a bootable USB or flash instead.Surprises? From other reviews I expected to have issues with the touch pad, but have not at all. I've always hated touch pads because I somehow manage to hit them with my thumb at the wrong time with annoying effects, but not this one. Otherwise, it seems to work no better or worse than any other I've used across a spectrum of manufacturers. I also like having less palm space, since I've come to believe that is something that helps to keep my thumbs away from the touch pad.My other surprise was with the built-in Bluetooth. I have an old Palm TX that has information I wanted to sync onto this machine, only to find USB sync for Win 7 x64 is not being supported by Palm software. A little investigation indicated I might be able to sync via Bluetooth. Sure enough, once enabled, both devices located each other and sync just worked. Incidentally, if you are new to x64 you too will likely find that some of your older apps won't run without an upgrade to a 64-bit version (sometimes this is just a question of needing to locate a 64-bit driver, but some apps do things that are incompatible with 64-bit architecture).I have not used an external monitor with this machine (yet) and don't have any particular reason to use hdmi or sound I/O, so check what other reviewers have to say if those are important to you. The card reader is the usual for this type of machine and having a hot key for enabling/disabling wi-fi or Bluetooth is definitely more user friendly than the physical switch Dell supplied. All in all, Acer has managed to wrap a lot of very nice stuff into a very small package. From my first month of usage, I believe it to be by far the best of the dozen or so laptops I've worked with over the years.January 18 - update - OK, I've now really put this machine through some heavy lifting. For a week long workshop I was involved in, I used this laptop for extensive editing of PowerPoint slides. Presentation files ranged from a couple of slides to over 500, and sometimes I had maybe as many as 10 of them open cutting and pasting to a master. I also had Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat open at various points, not to mention Outlook, Excel, and web browsers. The machine never crashed. Every now and then I noted a bit of a pause when the system's power misering required spinning the hard drive back up, so a SSD might be worth considering, although this was a minor annoyance. I forgot my charger and went my first day on battery alone without running dry, at least 5 hours of serious use including internet for a chunk of the time. It may be of interest that the generic nature of the charge port allowed me to use a colleague's (for an Aspire one netbook), which while a bit less potent was sufficient to restore full charge in a few hours. The final presentation had notes on each slide and apparently PowerPoint writes to pdf in image form if you ask for notes, which showed one non-gaming reason reason for having a graphics card. It took the machine quite a bit of time to do it. An app we worked on had a bug that was revealed because the CPU evidently runs a good bit faster than Intel's integrated graphics processor. On the other hand, Photoshop runs perfectly fine (at least for the kinds of editing I typically do). As for using projectors and external monitors, the machine brought both up effortlessly and automatically (Casio projector, miscellaneous monitor). For airplane usage and travel, it is the perfect size for today's cramped seating, even room on the tray table for my nano mouse. I managed to get along OK with the touchpad for routine stuff, but when it came to extended or precision work, I pulled out my nano mouse. Communications and networking were flawless, across multiple variations of network configurations. One more thing that may be of interest to some, the built-in mic can be set to pass through via Sound in the control panel, which means if you plug in an external mic and hook up a set of powered speakers, the machine can easily be used as a quick and dirty PA system (my last Dell system did this quite poorly - this one is quite good). There is nothing about the machine to change my review, except to note it is proving to be even better than I originally thought.

5Great connectivity
By Sam
I think the other reviewers have done a brilliant job and I fully agree with their assessments. I would only add the following points regarding ports......I was all set to buy an 11.6" Airbook. That plan came to a screeching halt when I discovered that it didn't have an Ethernet port. The best you could do was to buy a separate USB dongle that would provide 10/100 Ethernet. For an IT professional who is used to walking into a client's server room and taking a 50GB backup copy of a database in no time via gigabit ehternet that was just not going to work out. I don't fancy stepping back to 1990! Also a lot of hotels only have wired Ethernet and I just want to be able to plug in and go. Not spend time playing find-the-adapter.I also found out that the Airbook has a mini DisplayPort. To plug into an external VGA monitor you need (yep, you guessed it) another adapter. To plug into a TV or projector you need yet another adapter for HDMI. All these are sold separately and are more junk to cart around the world. They are also the exact thing that you would find that you have lost (or left back in the hotel) just when you needed to plug into a projector to give a presentation ;)So I was all set to lay out serious $$$ on a Sony ultra-portable when I came across the TimelineX. I've had it for a month now and I couldn't be happier with it. For the professional on the road that doesn't want to lug around some 15.6" monster this little guy is the perfect replacement. Compared to the Sony ultra-portables the price is outstanding value.

5Perfect choice!
By Josh
I just purchased this laptop as a portable solution to my Dell Studio, and i have to say that this is the first laptop that i have ever purchased, and as an IT professional I purchase quite a few, that has exceeded all expectations! I often work with demanding applications such as Adobe Premier CS5, Autodesk 3DS Max 2010, and Maya, and have to say that this machine is able to run them without any issues. Now im not saying this is a replacement for a desktop powerhouse system for heavy graphics editing and such but it is nice to have a small portable rig capable of opening these files and making modifications on the go. Now unsurprisingly this machine only rates a Windows Experience Index of 3.5 due solely to the fact there is no dedicated graphics card, but come on, if your seriously purchasing this with hopes of gaming in mind chances are your not even doing enough research to even be reading this review. But any way more about the product; upon first glance when taking this machine out of its box, and i say machine because i dare not call a system this powerful a "netbook", is "Wow, an i7 in this? Really?". Well lets get one thing straight, iX is a technology, not a specific model series of processors, but it does pack one heck of a surprising punch for a machine this size. As stated above I can easily run some of todays most demanding apps without any problems, and the 4GB of DDR3 RAM is quite handy! And for once, a battery life as advertised! with radios off and screen dimmed but still easily readable i got a 7+ hour life while doing normal operations such as email and word processing. Now obviously battery life drops when you do more demanding tasks, so as a comparison I am currently writing this review from this laptop with WiFi ON, music playing, screen brightness all the way up, and installing a game in the background and my battery life is just above 5 hrs!!! Now how many systems can claim that! Some people have made a couple small comments about a small amount of flex in the keyboard, and it is true, the keyboard does flex maybe a mm or so, but it is not noticeable unless looking at the kb whilst typing, otherwise i find the response and feedback of the keyboard pleasantly comfortable, and the layout is great and you should have no issues typing on it as the dimensions are very close to a full keyboards dimensions with the exception of a few keys such as arrows, but you can get used to that.Overall I must say that this machine is well worth the money and having now used it, I would have happily paid a hundred or two more for it!

5Dell XPS X14Z Review
By Ron
I have ordered this laptop in January 2012 thru Amazon. The delivery was on time as stated on the order form. This laptop has all the features and the specs I wanted. It is very light that you can take anywhere you go without complaining abouth the weight. The other feature that I like was the thickness, it is less than 1" and sound from the Left and Right JBL speakers was really owesome. With the specs I have selected; 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7-2640M, 8 GB DIMM, 750 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive using internet was never been so fast. I would recommend this product to everyone who like to have a high end Laptop at a very affordable cost.

5Great laptop that balances style and performance well.
By jar155
I must have looked at 100 different laptop models before finally going with the Dell XPS X14z. At first I had lots of recommendations for a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro, and I nearly went that direction, but in the end the Dell offered me a bit more punch for a better price. Coming from an HP laptop, I immediately appreciated the higher quality build of the laptop body, the better keyboard, and the much nicer trackpad. The 14" size is perfect for travelers that don't want to be on a cramped keyboard. The laptop is attractive, but I don't feel like you're paying extra for style here. Here are my pros and cons:Pros - Compact and lightweight, but doesn't feel cheap - Great keyboard - USB connections in the back keep cables out of your way - Fast boot up and wake up from sleep - Responsive trackpad - Runs quieter and much cooler than other Core i7 laptops I've tested - Good battery life - Better than average sound quality from speakers - Runs StarCraft 2 well in medium settings as well as other newer PC games - Comes with Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements for free - A whopping 8GBs of RAM right out of the boxCons - Audio and mic jacks are a bit stiff - I wish the screen resolution was a bit higher - No option for a matte screen - Quite a bit of pre-installed stuff that you don't want or need - Not one USB port on the side, so you using thumb drives makes you have to reach to the backOverall this is a fantastic laptop. It's cons are heavily outweighed by its pros and the complaints I do have are quite minor in the first place. This is a great everyday laptop and it handles PC gaming well enough to give you something to use on the go when you're not on your more powerful desktop. It handles design work okay, but if you're doing it professionally, I'd find something with a bit higher resolution screen. In the end, I'm really happy I went this direction instead of the Apple and Samsung laptops as I got a much higher price to performance value.

4The Best Dell I've Owned Thus Far
By cycloneTiger
I've owned a ton of Dells over the years with this being 5th Dell laptop and 4th in the XPS line of laptops. I used to own a Dell XPS 14 (the original 2010 model, not the 2012 model) which was one of the worst laptops I had ever owned. It was so bad that Dell eventually sent me a 15z (the bigger screen version of the 14z) as a replacement laptop after 7 repairs on the XPS 14. After nagging Dell for a couple of days, they sent me a 14z instead. I've owned the 14z for about two weeks now, and I have to say this is by far the best laptop I've ever owned. For the amount of hardware you get, this thing is TINY. It's basically about the same size as a MacBook Pro, yet it packs a full 2.80 GHz i7 with discrete graphics that can be switched off to save battery power. You can also go up to a 750GB 7200 RPM HDD and 8GB of RAM. Mine came with a 500GB drive and 6GB of RAM, which is perfectly fine for me.Screen: In terms of dimensions, this is simply the thinnest screen I've seen on a notebook. Its ridiculously thin. I would rate the color production and overall quality as above average though. Its definitely not the best display out there on laptops, but its not bad either. I use a external monitor for all my media stuff (gaming, movies, etc) so I don't frat much about screen quality. It's good enough.Performance: Its kind of hard to tell peroformance specs between PCs but I would have to say that the 14z with a 2.8GHz i7 definitely "feels" faster than my previous laptops, which either had a Core i5 2410m (2.3GHz) or a Core i5 560M (2.67GHz). Everything loads up very quickly and never seems to lag. I haven't run any high end games yet but have played HD videos while running some old school games like Need For Speed Carbon and Most Wanted. In both cases, the i7 and GT520M held their own just fine. The hard drive performs as well as any 7200RPM drive and overall system boot-up is fairly quick.Keyboard and Trackpad: This is one of the two categories that separates the good from the great laptops to me. Usually, Dell gets the keyboard right as I had experienced with my four previous Dell laptops. This one...not so much. The chicklet style keyboard is a nice upgrade to the XPS lineup but the keys are a bit hard when compared to something like a MacBook Pro keyboard. It is, however, something that you get used to after a few days of use. The trackpad, on the other hand, is nice. For a windows laptops that have notoriously small trackapds, this thing has a decent sized trackpad that squeezes out every inch it can from the 13.3 inch form factor. I will say that the trackpad is a bit over-sensitive at times and you may need to mess around with the settings to make it work the way you want. Overall, the keyboard and trackpad to me are both above average. Nothing special but more than good enough.Battery Life: This is the other deciding factor in terms of how good a laptop is. Keep in mind that this laptop comes with an i7 and discrete graphics, so you can't really expect great battery life here. The question is whether or not its good enough for your needs. Overall, I'm seeing anywhere from 2.5 to about 4 hours of battery life depending on settings and usage, which is about expected. I would've liked to see 3.5 to 5 hours, but 4 hrs of usage with screen dimmed down a bit and a few power saving options enabled isn't bad for the hardware package I'm getting.Noise and Heat: To me, this category has always been the downfall of the XPS line. I have yet to own a single XPS that doesn't get loud or hot. My XPS 14 got so hot that it started melting the paint off the palmrest. While the heat issues are far far less with this laptop, they are still there. My suggestion is buying a laptop cooling pad, which is something to consider buying with any expensive laptop. Spending 20 or 30 bucks to protect a three figure investment makes sense to me. Either way, noise (especially the back fan) and heat are definitely issues with this model and I would bet my money that its an issue with all of Dells high end notebooks. You should be fine if you don't mind providing the laptop with some extra cooling, but don't expect this notebook to be ultra-quiet or ultra cool.Peripherals and sound: Dell used to use JBL speakers in the older XPS lineup, which had incredible sound for laptops. This one, unfortunately, doesn't use the same speaker technology. Still, the sound is good enough for a laptop. I imagine most people with laptops are carrying around a pair of headphones like me and only use their speakers for when trying to watch something with a group of people, and the speakers on this unit are perfect for tasks like that.As far as the peripherals go, this unit is a bit short on USB ports and yes most of the ports are in the back. That can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on who you ask. My in-home setup includes a monitor, a USB dongle for a keyboard, a usb adapter for some external speakers, and a few other cables that are escaping my mind right now. Basically, I have no choice but to use a USB hub anyways, so I don't really mind having just 2 USB ports, neither do I mind having the ports in the back as it keeps my desk really clean. If you're the type that will switch USB in and out all the time, then I can see how having the ports in the back can get annoying though.Overall, this is solid buy at the right price. If you're paying anything more than 900 bucks for it, its probably too much given Dell has already come up with its successor. At the right price, this is a great deal since fewer and fewer laptops nowadays offer small form factor notebooks with full performance specs like this laptop offers.

5Extremely versatile and tough system
By Flyonfire
I've had this computer for over 2 years now, and have only recently had to replace the power cord. Being a truck driver, my power cords are often mangled easily, but this one lasted much longer than expected. As far as the physical casing goes, there is no major wear on any part of the computer and only a small chip on the case from dropping it off of a three-foot high shelf onto a steel floor a couple times. I've never had a laptop that was able to withstand the abuse of being in a truck nearly as well. It is also capable of complete versatility; I handle all of my financial documents, taxes, trip paperwork, video calls to family back home, and anything I need for my business with it, and am still able to play some of the more advanced computer games (even WoW plays on high-res with no lag). Overall, I would highly recommend this system for anyone interested in a good, stable, versatile computer that can take pretty much anything you throw at it!

4Great laptop!
By Phantha Boon
Just got this model for Christmas. There are veriations of this model along with different prices. It's a bit more expensive than most computers that will do similiar functions, with only the exception of having a core i7 processor (quad core). All the other computers that had i7 were way over priced built for gaming, but from that prespective, it's actually one of the cheaper ones if that'll be your primary use or want to have it as an option. On appearance, its black sleek look is very impressive. You'll have to get the customized version from hp.com if that's not your taste. The widescreen looks great that's nice for watching movies. The sound is pretty impressive too...lots better than most laptops, complete with sub and all. Windows 7 is sweet; so far opening programs fast and running it smooth. The side number keys are a plus too. I gave it s 4/5 because for the price I think they could've added more; like a blu-ray drive, 8GB RAM instead of just 6GB, a TV-tuner would also make it a total power house. The spec say it weights 7.7 lbs, but it feels more like 10 lbs. The heat vent felt pretty hot on the ones displayed in the store, but that may be because it had been left on all day. Currently it feels a little warmer than other non-high performing laptops, but not too bad. I'm thinking that may be an issue in the future, that's why you should get an extended warranty on it from hp.com. It's expensive, but well worth the investment...just calculated it into your total cost! Overall it's still a very cool laptop and I would highly recommend it.

5Perfect laptop
By Will
This laptop has everything I would ever need. I have had this laptop for two years and haven't found anything I don't like about it. To be honest with vista vs windows 7, vista is the best in my opinion. I know this laptop comes with vista, but a lot of stuff requires vista or older. Great laptop.

4Great laptop...Poor service from CircuitCity..
By Maurizio
GREAT Laptop! It's quite; fast, great for multitasking and videos. I do not have anything negative except for the hard drive is split in to 2...C& D. However, Do Not Purchase this computer from Circuit City. I had called about the belling to make sure that it was done correctly and the person at the other end of phone was about to rip my head off! Kept telling me that it was not his problem and had no idea to whom he should refer me too. I guess they don't need the business. Stay away from CirCuitCity...

5nice rig, a chainsaw in waiting.....***UPDATE***
By PRAXIS
Going from a Vaio FZ series that is going on 6 years AND still going, it was time to score another laptop. The build quality is OUTSTANDING, keyboard though just a wee bit of flex will impress most if not all typists in it's feel and response....graphics are awesome, more than enough power to run anything and everything you may need....if you find this guy at a discount as I did, grab it....I will be using this guy for photography purposes and editing, so I will update....Cheers!UPDATE!!!!!! Been using the laptop for a little over a month now....holy toledo....I'm running 16gb of RAM, 4 slots 4Gigs each....swapped out the stock HDD and installed a seagate momentum xt with the latest bios....SWEET! The HDD it came with is fantastic, I just wanted to run the hybrid drive to see if it is faster, indeed it is! The 16gigs of RAM might seem like overkill, but RAM is super cheap these days and I figured why not?....the only time I maxed out the RAM was when I was scrubbing a HDD it was running 15.2 Gigs, you may notice a nice bit of overhead when watching a movie on a large screen through this thing....lol......the build quality is definetely there,I dropped it a couple of days ago straight down on the front (keyboard side) edge, nothin' took it like a champ, this should last me a good few years....games!!!!!IT WILL GAME! Running Oblivion 60ish FPS approx, Batman Arkham was I think avg. 34 FPS....hell, I think it will run Crysis! The only way to upgrade this rig is to throw down an ssd, something I don't have the funds nor compulsion to do. The upgrades are more for my taste, not from necessity.....this laptop NEEDS NOTHING....I'm just weird. Cheers!

5so fast...
By medic
Just got my new g74sx xt1 in and i must say it is SWEET.PROS:Im not a gamer but do run programs like Autodesk 3ds Max. I tried to render an image in 3ds Max and while it was busy there was still enough juice to surf the web or work on a flash project. Render times are great. This computer is quiet and does not heat up.It comes with 12g Ram and I have ordered another 4 max it out, enough said on that topic.PRO OR CON, U DESIDE:This is a big heavy laptop. I dont mind the size at all but some might.CONS:The mouse pad is so big that when I am typing i hit it with my right palm. Can be annoying.Overall I love this beast. I edit video, create 3d scenes, build websites and make apps. With this I can work faster and that means more money.

1Great until something goes wrong.
By Irma Antoine
This unit worked for a few weeks before a small line appeared across the top of the screen, it was quickly followed by more and more lines as the weeks went on. ASUS only has one service center in the entire USA. Thus, you have to send the unit to California and be without it for several weeks if that's possible for you. It wasn't for me, and they just patently refused to work with me from my location, wouldn't use my carrier of choice, I begged them to throw me a bone. But they were rude and wouldn't even SELL me a new screen! Horrible customer support from ASUS is common, just Google "ASUS sucks" and read some horror stories for yourself. Beware.
