5Big improvement over older DV6 line
By Dave
Note: since I wrote a few reviews for some very simliar DV6 models Amazon has cross posted all those reviews.I posted a long review of the current crop of DV6-21xx series of notebooks here: HP Pavilion DV6-2170US. The models are mostly the same with different CPUs (one has a discrete graphics chip). All include the newest mobile processors from Intel which eclipse the older Core2 line in terms of performance. Those with integrated graphics include Intel's new HD graphics which are also a big improvement over Intel's old 4500HD graphics (which are still inferior to discrete graphics chips from AMD/ATI and Nvidia when it come to 3D gaming). I would suggest avoiding the older DV6 13xx and 12xx series unless you can get a really good price (which may happen as HP discontinues them). Here is the summary of models I posted in that review:If you're staring at the various DV6 models trying to decide which one to buy my advice is (based on the models available when I wrote this):- For home users who aren't gamers you can save about $100 if you go with the HP Pavilion DV6-2150US 15.6-Inch Laptop which combines a Core i3 with Win 7 Premium and a 6 cell battery. The performance for non-gaming software will be very close to the more expensive i5 models and you'll save money by going with Win 7 Premium and a smaller battery.- If you need good battery life, run higher end software, or like to game a bit go for the HP Pavilion DV6-2170US which combines the Core i5 with the 12 cell battery. The Intel graphics aren't the best but it's a big improvement over past products. This is the model I think has the best balance of features.- If gaming matters more than battery life you should probably look at other laptop lines but if you are sold on the DV6 go for the HP Pavilion DV6-2190US which has a quad CPU Core i7 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M graphics. It's only got a 6 cell battery and that CPU and graphics are going to drain it quickly. You'll pay about $200 over this model.- If you have a lot of older software consider the HP Pavilion DV6-2157SB Small Business Edition which comes with Windows 7 Pro (which can run older software on a WinXP kernel). It has a Core i3 and a 6 cell battery. It also has a different finish ("Plaid Mocha") but I haven't seen it so I can't comment on it.

5Excellent Choice
By Dave Mac
Been shopping for a new computer for over a year now as I could no longer put up with my slow-as-molasses 2003 Gateway. Shoulda' tossed it long ago, except I'm on a budget. I saw this HP Pavilion DV6 1250us at a huge (nearly 20%!!) discount at one of the chain office supply stores so I jumped on it. I'm completely knocked-out by how fast this thing is - runs like its hair's on fire! I timed it at 1 min 20 seconds to completely start-up, connect to wi-fi and be ready to go. My 20GB+ library of iTunes opens in about 5 seconds flat.My favorite features are; the jaw-dropping sharp, bright, vivid display, next generation faster memory (4GB DDR3), faster than usual 7200rpm hard drive (320GB), and the excellent integrated graphics card (with 1.6 GB memory!!) for watching smoooth on-line video (hulu etc.). I find Windows 7 to be not so different from XP. It has wireless N - glad I thought ahead when I replaced my router a year ago. Lots of USB ports (3 + 1 combo actually), and a little remote control that stores in the expansion slot, though I'm not sure how useful that will be... Battery life was good (2-1/2 hrs without economizing, after running it down to 5% & recharging it a few times to break it in).Did some research and found that this brand new i3 processor (released Jan 10, 2010) operates similar to a quad-core, so it's not too easily bogged down. Now the Norton Security Suite that I get free from my cable company runs in the background and I don't even know it's there. My old computer would sputter and fuss for 20 minutes or so just getting an update. So far, it runs like a champ with anti-virus going, burning a dvd, multiple tabs in Firefox open, and torrent down & uploads going all at once. Also easily handles Word documents with lots of artwork, which used to be a problem for me. Took me awhile to connect to my home wi-fi because I didn't realize you first have to turn on the wireless via a touch-switch above the keyboard. Set-up wizard and on-screen prompts did not make that clear, but I figured it out before long. Wasn't crazy about the case design but it's not so bad... looks like rings left by a glass on a wood table. HP even includes a little polishing cloth to keep it shiny - a nice touch.Overall, I'm thrilled with it. Cost half of what I payed for my Gateway in 2003 and I feel like I finally have a REAL computer that I'm confident will be current for at least a few years. I highly recommend you pick one up if you have the means!

3Disappointed in some features but overall it's good product
By ericatdallas
I'm a big fan of HP products. I've owned 4 HP notebooks and 3 printers over the last 10 years. I've also owned a Dell, Averatec, and Toshiba laptop over the same time period.Pros:1) Numeric keypad. The keys are a little slimmer than keypads on other notebooks (i.e. Toshiba and Sony models) but it isn't too hard to get used to. I use this a lot.2) Good battery life. I haven't fully drained it yet, but it looks like it's at least 3 hours/.3) Runs cool. I can use it for hours on my lap and it doesn't experience the heating issue my previous HP and Averatec laptops ran into.4) Overall, for a budget laptop, the overall build feels like a good quality.5) eSATA6) Remote - I never use these, but I may this time since it also has a HDMI output.Cons:1) The BIOS is locked. This is kind of annoying. I don't mean you can't get into it, but merely, some of the features or options aren't made available. I've never seen a BIOS this limited (and I've owned a lot of notebooks [see above] and desktop systems. This probably won't matter to most people though.2) As odd as it sounds, HP technical support told me it won't support a SATA SSD. I've read some laptops have problems with this.. I haven't actually tried this myself but I probably will. I'm hoping HP support just doesn't know what they're talking about and just don't see it in the supported hardware list.3) When the notebook goes into sleep mode, I get weird horizontal lines that forces me to reboot. I've tried refreshing the display, having it output to an external display, changing resolution, etc - but those methods don't work. This may just be my laptop or a driver issue.4) Easy to get fingerprints all over it (probably due to HP's finish).5) Dust seems to be very noticeable on HP's finishNotes/Neutral:1) Doesn't utilize a latch on the lid to lock it in place. The lid close tightly though.2) No USB or other I/O ports on back of laptop. It only has 3 USB ports.3) Power cable is on the right side of the laptop towards the back.4) Audio ports are on the front right and there are two headphone jacks. This seems fairly typical of a lot of HP notebooks but I've never had to use it. Still nice to have.5) There is a docking station expansion port on the left. Haven't tried it yet (don't own a dock), but at least you know it's compatible with a docking station.6) No modem. This doesn't bother me but for those of you who still use dial-up might want to know this.7) Does come with 802.11n and works as expected.Overall, I think this is a good notebook for a student or someone like me who doesn't do much with his notebook but tosses and abuses it a lot during travel.UPDATE: 14 June 2010Okay, so I bought a OCZ 60GB SSD. I didn't think it seemed right that I couldn't upgrade to it, so I figured it was a calculated risk. Anyway, the SSD works fine. There are a few issues to consider though... The recovery DVD you made will not install to a smaller drive, so you'll need something like Norton Ghost to do it. I looked into using free utilities and couldn't find any (i.e. Clonezilla, Partition Wizard, etc). Or, you need to buy a regular copy of Windows 7 and install it from scratch. The boot times do improve significantly. I don't know if it's worth it, but my laptop now completely boots up in about 30 seconds. Applications start almost immediately. However, I would probably avoid the upgrade again only because I miss having the drive space. Also keep in mind, if you do upgrade to a SSD to optimize it. There are a few tutorials online that tell you how to edit your registry to get the most out of it.This also means HP tech support loses a star since they told me it wasn't possible. While I was reloading the factory install, I did notice that there is a minimal install of the OS. It does come with some HP utilities, but a lot less. So I definitely recommend that you re-install if you don't like having too many applications preloaded. It takes about an hour.

4Great performance, shoddy craftsmanship
By Lindsey
I love this computer. Absolutely head-over-heels love it. It's compact and light enough for me to carry to and from class without breaking my back (can't say this of my old, 7-lb Dell!). They keyboard feels WONDERFUL. Construction feels solid. Beautiful design. Really amazing specs- same hardware as a MacBook Pro!- for half the price. The trackpad is a tad finicky, but I've adjusted the settings so it works for me. It'll take a tiny bit of getting used to, but there's an adjustment period with any new computer. I'm super happy with my purchase, and with the SquareTrade warranty I bought with the computer, I see us having a long, happy life together!EDIT: I just realized that the keyboard on this computer has a strange hill in the center, like it's being squeezed or something. It doesn't interfere with typing at all, but a brand new computer shouldn't have this kind of defect. What's more, when researching this computer, this was one of the things someone cited as a flaw in a review on another website, so I guess it happens fairly frequently. I didn't mention in the first draft of my review that this is my second of this model of computer; I bought the first one at Staple's a couple of weeks ago and had to return it because it had a faulty "W" key and a really jumpy track pad. I've noticed that this track pad is kind of inconsistent, and maybe more finicky than I previously thought. These design flaws have me considering returning the machine, but you just can't find this kind of hardware and gorgeous design for the same price point. Maybe I'll just get another one... third time's a charm, right?

1DM4 laptop skip letter if you type fast
By DM4-phobia
If you type reasonbly fast (i.e. 45wpm or above), you want to think twice before you buy any HP DM4-xxxx series of Pavilion laptop.I had a HP DM4-2070us and it skip letters like crazy after 3 months. Every 5-6 keystrokes you type will have one keystroke that is missed, that is, even though you did type that key, it will not appear on the screen. Or, you would hit the space bar or the Backspace key and it will not respond.I had to call and deal with HP Technical Support. They wasted my time trying out all kinds of stuff: Windows system restore point, uninstall and re-install keyboard drivers, full system recovery (that's a fancy term for re-formatting your whole hard disc), etc., etc. All these attempts failed to fix the problem. After struggling with all these for over two weeks, I have to ship it back to HP Warranty Repair Center and that took two weeks back and forth. During those two weeks I was out without a laptop to do my work. The Warranty Repair Center replaced the keyboard and ship it back to me. Unfortunately, that does not fix the problem. HP is kind enough to replace it with HP DM4-2180us but the whole process took another 7 days. I would be happy if that solve the probelm. Unfortunately, when I get the brand new HP DM4-2180us, it has exactly the same problem -- as soon as you type fast (over 45 wpm), the problem is obvious.I am not the only one with this problem. Use the two links below to take you to the HP Support Forum website and you will see different people with DM4-1165DX, DM4-1127 sb, DM4-2015dx, DM4-2070us and most recently, DM4-2180us having the same problem:[...]

4Great except for keyboard
By Sarah
I spent a long time researching computers and this one fit the bill in terms of functionality and price point. I really like almost everything about this machine - its cool, quiet (even with the fan running), and fast. I did uninstall a little bloatware when it first arrived, but that was easy and quick. The only issue i'm having is with the keyboard. It is very stiff and significantly slows down my typing speed because I have to hit all of the letters very hard to make sure they all come up on the screen. The shift key in particular is hard to use to the point of severe frustration. Nobody else seems to have this issue, so it may just be my machine.

4Great Alternative to MacBook Pro
By Ryan Bergstedt
Pros:1080p - Need I say more?Fast Dual Core I7 processorThin - Almost as thin as MBPSleek design (complete ripoff of MBP)Future proof - 2x USB 3.0$800 cheaper than equivalent MBPCons:No Quad Core optionA little loudNo Blu-Ray option (can't make BR drives thin enough to fit)Overall:If you are thinking about buying a MacBook Pro and dual booting to Windows, consider this instead. You can get a top of the line 15Z with a solid state HD for less than the entry point for a MBP.

4Most expensive laptop I have ever own
By Amer
I just got this laptop. I mean like 4 hours ago. Thanks to cloud and everything. I was ready to use it for work within couple of hours. Love Mozy, Dropbox. This is the second time I changed my laptop in 30 days. Last one broke down on me within a months return period. (That was Acer not Dell). As programmer I don't need any high end laptops but recently I picked up video editing as one of my hobbies. That and I was really looking for high res screen to maximize productivity. On this laptop, I can open two files in 2 editors and work on them. Very useful during webdev. So the good parts first:Sleek looking1080POverall good feeling to keyboardNot too much bloatware (Acer was a nightmare cleaning up).But it is not perfect. The 2 biggest issue for me right now are:No separate home & end keys. As a programmer I need those keys. You can hold FN key and hit left or right arrow but I really wish they had regular home & end keys.NO SLOT FOR LOCK!!! Almost all laptops come with a slot for locking via standard laptop locks. This one doesn't. Since I like to leave my laptop in office overnight every once in a while. Now I won't be able to lock it down. This is a big issue for me. You won't think that Dell would be missing such a basic thing on their laptops. Well I guess I should have looked at the pictures more closely.I will update my review based on my experience.

5Awesome and Great
By Gravy Playa
I bought this as a replacement for my old Dell XPS M1530. The only change I made was adding a 256GB SSD drive. Now this thing is lightning fast. Dual core with Hyper-threading makes 4 cores. Why pay extra for a quad-core machine? Compared to the M1530 its half as thick, twice as light, and 40X faster. This same laptop on the Dell website was over $1400. So getting it here is definitely the way to go. I never had a laptop with a backlit keyboard so that's a plus. I would recommend this to ANYONE looking for a laptop replacement for their desktop. My only complaint is that I run Ubuntu and it does not play nice with the Nvidia Optimus card. To resolve this install bumblebee drivers first.

4Nearly Perfect
By Patrick Mcmullen
This is my first PC in almost a decade, so the fact that I even purchased it over a Mac in the first place speaks volumes about this little computer. I've owned it for a little over a month now, so I think it would be fair to say I can assess its tru value at this point. I was impressed by the specs, looks, and size, and for the price (including free xbox with amazon student deal) it really can't be beat in the ultraportable market. I would recommend anyone considering a Sony, Apple, or Samsung ultraportable look into this model as well.I was looking for something this size and weight, with decent specs, but not a blazingly fast, top-of-the line performer. I'm used to the $2000 and up, upgraded Macbook Pros, so I know performance and reliability when I see it, and this thing meets my expectations and more.Pros:Perfect size and shape (same thickness and weight as 2010 Macbook Air)Plenty fast and reliable (though not an i7, or 2011 MBA)Great looks (I actually prefer the flat rounded-smooth shape and color instead of Macbook)Very nice keys trackpadDecent screenDecent WebcamGood software included (Good version of Windows 7 64-bit, Little bloatware)Cons:Keyboard not backlit (I still look at my keys sometimes, so typing in dark is hard)No SD card slot (Not a dealbreaker obvuiously, but would have been nice)Battery underwhelming (2.5 to 4 hours isn't bad, but competitors are getting 9 from a charge)Unless you are a superuser, and you need gaming on the go, or video and music editing, this will be more than enough for you. If you want to be doing very processor intensive tasks, then ultraportable probably isn't your class anyway.

4Light and good look, but a bit too slow
By Chi Li
Pro: Love the design, and the screen is amazing. Very light.Con: Only two USB, intergrated battery - hope it will not die on me soon, no SD card slot, a bit slow in time even with a i5 processor

3Great lightweight notebook BUT!!!
By Tiong Guan Chng
got the Orange U260 .... 1st impression is that it is very lightweight, handy and the screen is very good. Speed is not exceptional but is adequate for its class. the keyboard felt really good and the system is really queit. I looked at the specs and was really good. Here are the cons:When I bought the system I read it could go up to 8gb! but the system I have only can stay at 4gb! it suppose to have 2 slots of memory! but after calling Lenova I found out that not all models have that! So! its a big Minus to me when I try to upgrade the memory .Access to HD and memory is really difficult. since it is kind of a self contain unit and not able to change things out.3rd issue is the battery cannot be easily change !have to pretty much strip the unit to get to it! if you do decide to have a spare! since the battery life on this unit is not impressive! rated at 4hr! but I am getting more like 3 hr max!Overall! was a bit dissapointed with some of these items I mentioned! other than that! I loaded up Office 2007, Adobe Photoshop CS5, and even run some of my game well.DaveC

4DV6-2190US - Great, if you're looking for lots of speed
By jsday12
This DV6-2190us model is a desktop replacement.Pros: The i7 processor is very fast, has 8 threads of execution (4 hyper-threaded cores) and the turbo boost kicks in when needed. It boots quickly, and runs applications quickly. I was able to install software and still use the machine without noticing any slowdown. It has a dedicated onboard graphics processor, with 1GB of dedicated graphics memory for gamers, I presume (I do not have any games to test it with).Cons:1. The fan runs continuously unless you turn it off in the BIOS. If you turn it off, it cycles, which is even more annoying. It cycles even when the laptop is idling (using very little cpu time). I did not notice the fan noise until I worked with it in my quiet office.2. The keyboard layout takes learning. The pgup/dn are in the far upper right. The arrow keys and keypad keys are smaller than the QWERTY keys.3. The power adapter has 120 watts output, and is huge and heavy.Other:1. touchpad has a lot of friction, but if you use your fingertips, it glides pretty well.2. The battery life wasn't too bad, but I wasn't pushing the CPU or graphics.I exchanged it after a week for the HP DV4-2170us model, which is cheaper and more portable.

5Big performance bump over older DV6 line
Those with integrated graphics include Intel's new HD graphics which are also a big improvement over Intel's old 4500HD graphics (which are still inferior to discrete graphics chips from AMD/ATI and Nvidia when it comes to 3D gaming). One specific thing I want to highlight about this model is that the CPU is the Intel i7-720QM, one of the top performing notebook CPUs on the market. With four cores running two threads each you computer can (if needed) act like a 8 core processor. When not needed the extra cores shut down and the frequency goes up (part of what Intel calls "Turbo mode". The downside is that the combination of this quad core CPU and the discrete graphics chip from nVidia will drain your battery much faster than a dual core CPU with Intel's integrated graphics (expect the battery to last 1-2 hours during typical use). Unless you are a 3D gamer this is probably not the notebook for you. If you are a 3D gamer the included nVidia 230M graphics chip will make 3D games at lot more playable. For example Fear2 goes from 12FPS on Intel HD to 45FPS on the nVidia 230M at medium settings. The other thing to note about this model is that it has Gigabit ethernet (10/100/1000) whereas the dual core HPs have standard 10/100 ethernet. Not something that matters to most people but I thought I'd mention it since it's easy to miss when you are comparing models. If you are really sold on this model but need better battery life you can buy a HP KS526AA 12-Cell Multi Battery for it and get another 1-2 hours of battery life. It adds another $100 to your purchase price. You can order direct from HP with this battery but I'm not sure if that gets you a better price (taxes, shipping, etc...) over Amazon or not. It's worth pricing out.

5Great Performing Laptop So Far
By James
Have used now for over a month and have found this to be a great little machine. Only problems I've had are related to Win 7 compatability and not the Laptop.Pros: Great speed Full keyboard with number pad Easy volumn adjustment with visible sliderCons: No separation between touch pad and buttons - too easy to get both fingers on touch pad

3Excellent Laptop with a Major Defect
By Hadi Bayat-pour
I bought my laptop in late April or early May of 2011 on EBay (brandnew). As advertised, it boots up in seconds. The picture is crisp clear. The numeric keyboard is a plus. But from the very start I had problem with power button. Sometimes it would start and shut down within a second. As time passed it happened more frequently and then it would happen three times before I could get it started. I called and sent it to Samsung (they provided UPS label); they returned it stating it had been fixed. It was not. I sent it back again asking for a different laptop with similar specifications. They refused to replace it; but, they fixed it. Within a few months the problem reappeared. Of course, each time I had to move all the data to an external disc and remove all my passwords and reconfigure it upon return. I have a washer/dryer from Samsung and the dryer has the same problem. I am very disappointed. No more Samsung products for me.Hadi,McLean, VA

4Too expensive for what it delivers, but decent
By College.guy.Brown
Looking back on my purchase I do not regret it. It is a powerful laptop with all the necessities and has two hard drives that amount to about 700gb of storage capacity. The camera is decent and the ram plus the video card are very useful. I loved it and the only complaint I have is that it cost a little too muvh for what it delivered. That is not to say it doesn't deliver.

1repeat problems with touch pad
By Kat
I have had multiple problems with this laptop. First it doesn't start up properly half the time and TWICE my touchpad has gone out and I have had to get it fixed. It looks great on the outside and the screen has wonderful picture but it does no good when the damn thing wont run properly. VERY disappointed. Will never buy a samsung again!
