4Nice Hardware, wished for better Software
By Brittny Piper
Laptop has been great, only real issue is that is switches boot options at times and has difficulty booting up. Easily fixed. Macafee is a serious nuisance as always.

5Fantastic Laptop
By R. N. Kinnison
(Read the whole thing to see how my feelings changed)I bought this laptop a few weeks ago, and it has been amazing. First of all, everything about it is beautiful. Just completely gorgeous. It is bold, but yet sleek and elegant and really attracts attention. It really is the most gorgeous laptop I've ever seen.If you are on the fence between this one and the slightly cheaper black one with 8GB of ram, go for the white if you like the style better (To me, it looks worlds nicer). 6GB is a very nice amount of ram and it isn't as though ram is outrageously expensive to upgrade if you really want 8GB. I am a photographer who uses very high quality DSLR photos and makes flash animations that slowed down my other computer, but this one handles them like they are nothing. The display is beautiful and perfect for movie watching. In fact, in my family, we all have laptops, but we always use mine to watch movies now because it is so clear. Finally, for those of you who are gamers, it handles my favorite MMORPG like a dream. It really is the perfect laptop for all three activities.Another thing I didn't even know when I bought it was that it can connect with your Bluetooth capable phone and play music from it.The lit keyboard is a lot of fun and the ability to launch the web in a matter of seconds using a single button is pure genius. It's perfect for times when you're rushing. Now, being completely honest, there are 2 things I'm not thrilled with when it comes to this laptop, but they aren't deal-breakers:#1. The sound system is pretty bad. Maybe that is because I have a Bose system in my car, that I'm a film major, or that I'm a pianist, but I'm pretty accustomed to high quality sound. The sound system from this sounds very tinny. So, I found a solution; I purchased the Logitech lap desk with a fan (it doesn't overheat or anything like that, I'm just paranoid because my first laptop did...) and a speaker system and connected that to it (it is also white, so the combo looks pretty sweet) and the sound is now top notch. So, I'm VERY satisfied. My laptop stays cool, even while I'm doing highly taxing things like gaming and my sound is now fantastic.#2. I have no idea what in the world that part is called, but the part you drag your finger over in order to move the arrow. I don't feel as though it responds as well as my last laptop's did (it was a Toshiba Satellite), and yes, I have already placed it on maximum sensitivity. So, I simply purchased a mouse so I don't have to deal with it. (I must admit it does have a few neat features, though. Like the ability to scroll by moving your finger in a spiral shape, but sometimes it would take me like 3 times to get it to work... I hear a lot of people like this, so maybe it's just me...)Other than those two items, literally everything else is top notch. Very beautiful craftsmanship. Sleek design. Fast. Looks even better than in the photos. You will not be disappointed with this laptop. Sony has truly outdone themselves.Pair it with 17 inch White Notebook Laptop Shoulder Messenger Bag / Carry on Briefcase, the Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700, a white mouse, and a black mouse pad and you are ready to go.Therefore, 5 stars. It is the perfect all-around laptop. And classy to boot.Feb 21, 2012 Edit:As of this writing, I'd give it 3/5 Stars with a title of " If I had known ":First thing I want to talk about is the lower left-hand corner. It melts. No joke. There is a light over there, and one day, it suddenly looked like I'd dropped it. Which, considering I'm a gadget person and pride myself in having the most stylish of gadgets, is mortifying. I'm literally known by all my friends and coworkers and members of my church to be a gadget person! I've had to explain to so many people that that corner heats up and separated itself from the bottom part of the laptop. Ack...If you closely inspect it, you can see it is not possible that it could be from being dropped, but it has to be from some internal overheating issue. That didn't change the functionality of the laptop, but I'd think twice if you tend to sell your laptop after a year or two of use. I can't remember while I'm writing this when I purchased this laptop, but my review will show that date...At first, I thought it was my fault, until I went on eBay and found the same exact laptop with the same exact bend in the same exact spot. This is a defect. If I'd known that was going to happen, maybe I'd have done something to cool down that corner or whatever... But I don't know how anyone would have known...Next, the Blu-ray player doesn't work. I also have an iPad, and got used to watching movies on it, so I never bothered to try the Blu-Ray player (though I had played DVDs, which were fine.) I finally got around to putting in a Blu-Ray disc, and it won't play. I tried everything. I went to Sony's site, and tried their fixes, downloaded VLC media player, restarted the computer... I wonder if it ever worked...Sony customer service stinks to high heaven. About a year after I got the laptop, it couldn't find Windows. Then, I started having problems with logging in, where it would not be able to bring up my desktop. I learned how to fix this, though (go to safe mode and stop all but the essential programs from booting up at startup.) That may be a Windows problem, though... Nevertheless, before I knew how to fix it, I called Sony for help and they ended up installing this diagnostic program on my computer and using all this non-specific jargon to creatively not tell me what my problem was. Then, they wanted to charge me over a hundred bucks to fix this one issue. I declined and did more researched and learned how to fix it myself. It took me 5 min to fix it once I knew what I was doing. Talk about taking advantage...I've been asked before why I didn't just sell it and get a Macbook. Here is why I still own and use this laptop:- It is still fast. Though I got it a bit ago, compared to what's out there, it is still powerful and modern and will be for likely a couple more years. It still does the work I bought it to do and still does it well. I even refer to it as my "powerhouse"- Macbook Pros go up to 15 inches nowadays. This laptop is 16.4 inches. I like the extra room.- The Mac is 21 or 25 inches and then they have a 27 inch model, I think. But, it isn't portable. I can take this laptop with me.- A Macbook with this kind of power would run me double what I paid for this laptop. Despite my frustrations, the price was right. Not to mention, I've long since paid off this laptop.- It looks better. Not that the Macbook or Mac is ugly or anything, but this VAIO is stylish. It just looks better.Overall:I'd still recommend this laptop, but never for an amateur user. Function-wise, if you don't rely on the Blu-Ray player (like I tend not to, I just randomly was handed a Blu-Ray to watch, otherwise, I likely never would have noticed the Blu-Ray player had issues) and you have the technological know-how or research skills to help yourself when there are problems, and you do not intend to sell it for anything even remotely close to what you have to spend to get it, you'll be fine. If even one of those does not apply to you, skip it.Ah yes, and one more thing. It is a white laptop, so expect it to get dirty.

5AWESOME!
By Zeph
This laptop is fast, plays full hd videos, blu ray, has an amazing keyboard layout, has a great screen, the sound is loud, and it plays most games on med-high settings. Compared to other similar gaming machines, this one is a better deal! You get it all. The only downsides are the battery and weight. It dies pretty fast, usually lasts me a good 2-4 hours with heavy browsing and viewing videos. Of course it lasts longer just doing basic things. When trying to carry the laptop with one hand, it is pretty darn heavy. This laptop also looks very stylish. I would recommend this to everyone! I also have one suggestion: Never use this laptop when your hands are dirty with ink. IT WILL STAIN! And if you are a perfectionist like me, you will be pretty upset.

2Cheap parts
By Carlos B. Montoya
I had this laptop for just over a year. Didn't buy extended warranty. I used it approximately less than 3 months total. When the year was over, the video graphics card and the LCD screen both died. Sony support calculated minimum $600 to fix/replace parts with new + to/from shipping cost. I would not buy a Sony laptop again nor recommend them.

5Versatile functionality, RAM upgradable to 16GB, excellent large screen laptop!!
By Gene Cloner
The Sony VAIO E 17" laptop is a highly versatile, very functional laptop. As expected, it is heavy (but still portable) and the large display makes the battery life quiet short (less than 2 hours).Look and feel: The laptop came nicely packed with a battery, power adapter and brief quick start instructions. A smooth, soft black surface and the silver Vaio symbol make it look very pretty and a nice feel to carry around (slightly on the heavier side though - 7 lb). Installing the battery is a snap (literally) and you can start using it right away. The screen is also very pretty (1920 x 1080); The lighted keyboard and the trackpad make are fairly smooth and comfortable to use.Getting started: The initial setup did take a while for me (7-8 minutes) and getting used to Windows 8 is taking its time. You have to move your mouse pointer to the different corners to get different bars (bottom left for start, bottom right for set-up, and top left for running tasks). In some instances, right click works. For example, it took a while for me to figure how to get the menu bar with all applications (like a conventional start menu). You have to go to the start menu, right click and select show all apps - a bit tedious as of now. Given that I am reviewing the laptop and not Windows 8, I guess I wont ding the stars.Connecting to the network was fairly easy due to the WPS set-up. If you have an older router and need the mac-id of the laptop, there is no easy way to get it. You have to use the command prompt (ipconfig -all method; If you dont know what this is please google). The laptop comes with 30 day trial of Kaspersky internet security. Initial updates for the virus signatures and windows updates took a while, but after that everything was smooth. Internet explorer seems to work fine, but if you are not a fan, firefox and chrome work very well as well.Overall, it took me ~30-40 minutes to get all these done and start doing something meaningful.Ports and I/O: The key board is a full size keyboard (meaning it has dedicated num keypad). The keyboard has back light - very useful when working in a low lit environment. The trackpad is of good size and works smoothly. However, finger gestures work well only in some menus - for example the two finger swipe to scroll works well in the app menu, but not so smooth in program windows (e.g. explorer or notepad). In the front, there is an SD card port and a PRODuo card (Sony's) port plus indicate lights for wifi, power, battery and hdd. On the left side, there are power, ethernet, VGA, HDMI, USB 3.0 (Yes!) and audio ports. On the right side, you have the DVD-RW drive and three USB ports.Specific keys for Sony Assist (customer support), Web (starts default browser) and Vaio (Vaio control center), power button and the regular num, caps and scrlock lights are situated above the keyboard.Functionality: The laptop has a i7 2.2GHz processor and came with 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800 RAM (installed in one of two RAM slots). So, you can upgrade right away by filling the other slot if you want. The laptop can take up to 16G RAM. Given that 2x8G RAM costs only around $100, this is a really good upgrade to get. [Note: Sony recommends 8G max, but the board manufacturer and RAM test tools from Crucial suggest 16G and it works].Browsing, regular word processing, viewing videos etc everything works very smoothly. I did not have any problems with these applications at all. There is no dedicated video memeory (Intel HD Graphics 4000), but videos are displayed smoothly - tried both a DVD and a netflix HD movie. The audio is also really good. The webcam is so so, especially under low light conditions. It has a 0.9mp 16:9 camera. You can use it for chat, but not so great video quality.Unique features: This laptop also has some unique features. The VAOI gesture control uses the webcam - when it is on, you wave your hand in front of the computer to navigate pictures in a slideshow, play the next song, pasue etc. (left = go back, right=go forward, down=pause; works well and very useful) or move back and forth while browsing (works, but least useful since you are sitting at the keyboard while browsing anyways). Anyway, you can choose which software you want to use gesture controls with. They also mention the ability to control volume with this feature (twist your palm instead of moving it left or right) - however, this didnt work very well for me compared to the forward, back and pause controls. The USB3.0 port can be set-up to charge your phone etc even if the laptop is not on.Overall, a really versatile and functional laptop useful for number of daily applications; RAM upgradablity is a really good feature.

4Mostly Good Computer With Some Serious Setbacks
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
I'm of two minds about this computer. On the one hand, its gee-whiz new features, like a backlit keyboard and ultra-fast processor, make it really handy. It has the largest screen I've ever seen on a laptop, allowing me to view wide fields, which is really handy on features like Google Maps. The screen has a cinematic aspect ratio, which, when combined with a dual system graphics package and the best speakers I've ever heard on a laptop, makes it a good entertainment system.Despite initial doubts about the much-publicized Windows 8 start screen, I find I like having my programs laid out in a prioritized grid. It's possible to organize them as I want and, when I don't want, it's easy to switch over to a conventional desktop. This variable organization system, combined with higher processor speed that shrugs off cookies and spyware more easily, makes this system run more smoothly than prior Windows systems--maybe Redmond has worked out the kinks.I like much of the pre-loaded software. The designers obviously had media creation and management in mind, because it comes with onboard video and audio editing software which, while I'm still learning to use them, I expect to put to good use soon. Its high processor speed makes it good for YouTube, Netflix, streaming audio, and other long-package content. It's fast and big while remaining lightweight, sleek, and relatively inexpensive. I like plenty about this computer.Yet it has serious limitations. For instance, unless the power cord is connected, it drops the Internet at random intervals, for no discernable reason. This is a serious problem, because it doesn't include a pre-loaded office software suite, so I have to either pay a further nearly $100 a year for a Microsoft Office license, or use online office programs like SkyDrive or Google Drive. Since I can't spare the cost of the license, I need my Internet. Twenty-minute `Net lapses are no small issue. But when the power cord is connected, it only charges up to 80%, and then stops. I'm sure there's a reason why, but I haven't found it yet. Hit-or-miss `Net connectivity and diminished battery capacity make this computer not very useful for use away from home. Since I can fix these problems by just keeping the computer plugged in, I will make this my at-home computer, but I'll have to keep my older, smaller, less sleek laptop for travel and for writing in restaurants. On balance, I like this computer. Its new, whiz-bang capacities and shiny software do-funnies make it more useful than my prior systems, and I will keep it as my primary computer. But it has quirks, mainly in hardware, that keep me from adopting it as my sole computer. Like the super uber-genius it is, it can do more than I can, and probably gets bored waiting on me. But like a super uber-nerd, it gets awkward around people. I need to learn to live with its quirks.

5Solid laptop!

I consider myself to be a pretty basic PC user. I'm not a graphic designer or hardcore gamer but I do like to browse the web, do some gaming and photo editing, write documents, watch videos, and listen to music, among other things. Often times I like to engage in several of these activities simultaneously. For my needs the Sony Vaio SVE1713CCXB does not disappoint. With its 3rd Gen i7 processor and 4GB of RAM, I have yet to ask something of this machine that it can't deliver smoothly and seamlessly. The RAM is upgradeable to 16GB but at this time I personally see no need to upgrade as the 4GB supplied in this machine is proving to be more than sufficient for my needs. Start-up on this machine is lightning fast and I'm enjoying getting used to Windows 8 at my own pace with the ability to toggle between the app screen and a traditional desktop. The geek in me loves the backlit keyboard and the sleek design, and the 17.3" LED screen delivers a beautifully vibrant picture. This laptop produces surprisingly crisp audio as well. At 7 pounds this laptop has a bit of weight to it but that's to be expected for a laptop of this size. The unit doesn't feel bulky, it's just a sizeable machine. This laptop runs extremly quietly and stays cool. I like to use my laptop on my actual lap at times and this one doesn't get so warm that it becomes uncomfortable. It also vents to the side instead of underneath like my previous laptop did which is a feature I really appreciate. My only complaint is the 2 hour battery life which is a bit on the short side. The battery does charge relatively quickly though (and for what it's worth mine also charges to 100% without a problem) so this isn't a huge inconvenience, just something to consider. With a power cord that's over 8' long it's not bothersome to have the unit plugged in while I'm using it at home either.Overall I'm extremely pleased with this laptop. It's more than adequate for my needs and is a machine I know can grow with me should my needs ever change. Great product!

5Cool Looking Laptop But Lack Accessories (Updated Jun12, 2011)
By MITBeaver
I have had my Samsung Series 9 laptop for about 3 weeks now. It's thin and light, and it's cool looking. I love the fast boot up feature when open and close the laptop. The backlit keyboard is also a great feature when using it in the dark. I use it for work, mainly emails, web surfing, small size Excel spreadsheet, and occassional CAD print viewings. I find the i5 processor with 4G of memory is sufficient. The onboard solid state drive is small, so you will need a portable hard drive or use the new Cloud storage services such as Dropbox. The negatives are the mouse pad and the lack of accessories. After 3 weeks of adjustment, I am still having a lot of trouble using the mouse pad. But the biggest complaint is the lack of accessories that are compatible with this laptop. As of today, there is no airplane power adapter that is compatible with this laptop. I tried to buy an extra power adapter from Samsung and its distributors so I have a spare when I use the laptop at home, but there is none in stock with a minimum of 9-week lead time. It uses micro HDMI output, so I am still trying to figure out a way to show my Powerpoint presentation via a projector with a VGA input. It requires a special dongle for CAT5 Ethernet connection. If you lose it, good luck in getting a replacement because it can't be found anywhere on the Internet.Hope there will be more accessories available soon, and then I will add one extra star to the review.**UPDATE: The accessories are now readily available to be purchased online. Thanks for the postings by other reviewers. I have updated the rating from 4 to 5 starts.**

2Amazing Laptop, Finally an Air2 Contender ...But Horrible Wi-Fi!
By Brian Neely
This is a great laptop, and I really wanted it as a Windows-based replacement for my MacBook Air2, but unfortunately the Wi-Fi is horrible. You have to be almost on top of a Hotspot in order for it to get a good signal. And I bought the fully loaded machine, i7 quad-core with 8GB RAM....it never even occurred to me that the Wi-Fi would be the limiter! In a test at ~25ft from a hotspot (which is the closest point that I could actually still have a signal on the Samsung 9), and using Speedtest.net website/apps....> Macbook Air2 - Full bars and ~35Mbps download> Dell 6520 - Full bars and ~35Mbps download> Old Gateway Laptop with a slide in PC Card for Wi-Fi - Full bars and ~30Mbps download> iPad 2 - Full bars and ~28Mbps download> iPhone 4 - Full bars and ~25Mbps download> Samsung 9 - 1 Bar and <100KbpsThat is a pathetic design deficiency for Samsung. How did that make it through their labs??? Let's be honest, if you are buying a really sleek, portable laptop, you are probably using it as a mobile device connecting to a hotspot (at work, at home, or on the go), this Wi-Fi issue makes it nearly unusable.Sorry Samsung, I absolutely LOVE your products, but you really dropped the ball on this one!

5Excellent light-weight laptop
By J.Brown
I have been using my Series 9 for a week now and LOVE it! If you are on the fence about buying it, waiting for the Macbook Air refresh (like I was), don't bother waiting... this is as close to an Apple killer as you can get and an Apple beater when it comes to performance! This thing is FAST! I knew I would like this laptop, I did not think I'd love it! It boots in 20 seconds from power off, 2 seconds from sleep mode. I'm getting about 7 hours of life from the battery, and it recharges quickly. I carry it around everywhere now, which I've never done with another laptop due to the weight. The screen is terrific, the keyboard feels really good, the case does not get very hot even after hours of use, and the audio is surprisingly good for a small laptop. A nice touch no review has mentioned (that I've seen) is the perimeter of the screen is lined with a nice, thin, raised rubber edge that keeps the lid from scraping on the main body when the lid is closed and, presumably, to keep the keyboard keys from contacting the screen and scratching it. I've trimmed the laptop "wrap" (a nice fiber like protective sheet) from the box to lay between screen and keyboard when in transit to protect the screen. No machine is perfect though, and if you are considering buying, here are a few things I feel lacking: 1) the track pad is very nice, but my thumbs, as I type, jump the cursor all over the place. After YEARS of trackpads on laptops I would think they could solve this. I've played with sensitivity settings and such with no luck, so I've taken to turning off the trackpad (FN-F5) when I'm doing a lot of typing. Otherwise, this is one of the best trackpads I've used. 2) Coming out of sleep mode, the wireless adapter takes much longer to reconnect than any other laptop I've ever used. Its not alarmingly protracted, maybe 15 seconds or so, but I'm used to loading up Email the moment the system comes alive and being online, I have to wait for the Samsung. This may be due to the Wireless-N adapter, I've not had Wireless-N on anything before and I have a new Wireless-N hub coming soon which may cure this "problem". Mostly I've just learned to wait. 3) I wish the drive size was bigger. I thought 128GB would be just fine, but they don't mention the recovery partition, Windows, and Samsung utilities would take up 28GB of that. 4) The ports. Really, Samsung, you couldn't put a SHDC slot in there anywhere? Micro-SD is completely useless. This was no surprise to me, I did read the specs before buying. 5) A minor gripe: the edges around three sides of the laptop lid are rather "sharp", I'm not sure why they chose not to round these edges off other than maybe to assist opening the case, but they could have made this case close flush and retained the general style. 6) The onscreen control display was NOT enabled out of the box! When I change volume level, I want to see the level and confirm I changed it (or muted it). The utility is installed, I had to go find it and manually run it. Once I found it, I dragged it into the Startup folder so it loads automatically. Dumb. This should have been automatically loaded at the factory.Fairly minor gripes, but maybe Samsung is listening and rev 2 will take care of these few limitations. Overall, you will love the experience! For those balking at price, it is competitively priced IMO, and now that its dropped $200 from the intro price, its definitely a deal!! As for accessories, this is a brand new model, it will take time for them to get to market - once third party manufacturers figure out the success of the product, and I think it will be a success, they will be more apt to make the accessories we want. I too would like a car charger... I'll be watching for one...
