Add a Seagate Momentus XT 750 and it's an ultrabook
By Edward
I bought this laptop specifically to run Linux and it does a good job of it so far.The upsides -- fast processor and decent NVIDIA GPU, compact size and great battery life. The downsides -- keyboard is not backlit and the stock hard drive is horribly slow. If you have the technical wherewithal, replace it with a Seagate Momentus XT 750 ($130) and you will be much happier. There are YouTube videos showing how to upgrade the U36SD and the U36SG is basically the same. It is a pain but well worth it.[...]Seagate Momentus XT 750 GB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 32 MB Cache 2.5 Inch Solid State Hybrid Drive ST750LX003For those with an eye for detail here is what 'lspci' and 'cat /proc/cpuinfo' have to say:eherr@singularity:~$ lspci00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family DRAM Controller (rev 09)00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200/2nd Generation Core Processor Family PCI Express Root Port (rev 09)00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 (rev 04)00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 05)00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev b5)00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 2 (rev b5)00:1c.3 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 4 (rev b5)00:1c.5 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 6 (rev b5)00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 (rev 05)00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation HM65 Express Chipset Family LPC Controller (rev 05)00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family 6 port SATA AHCI Controller (rev 05)00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller (rev 05)01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [GeForce 610M] (rev ff)03:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. Awesome!

Great Laptop
By ATR-DRIFTS
The laptop is great. It's made of aluminum and magnesium alloy which does not attract fingerprints. However, oils from the finger/hands are slightly noticeable. The frame surrounding the screen is a dust magnet so you would have to clean it often. The laptop is very light. Battery life is great. I got anywhere from 7-8 hours in quiet office mode with approximately 40% brightness doing basic things such as web browsing, Microsoft office, pdf, etc. simultaneously. The display is great and very bright hence why I lowered it to 40%. Like most other laptops out there, the speakers are not the greatest but it is good enough in my opinion. It is relatively loud in sound but the quality of the sound is not the greatest. Start up time is good to decent thought it would be faster with a SSD. The hard drive is split into two drives (C & D). The power saving physical button on the top left gives easy access to different power saving modes which is great.Amazon has some of the incorrect spec. The sticker states it's a GeForce 610 1g and not 2g. It's a 2.8ghz 2640M i7 dual core and not 2820QM or 2620M. Laptop gets a little warm on the bottom even in quiet office mode so it's not the best to use it on your lap for an extended period of time. When pushing the laptop to high performance, the area above the keyboard where the battery is gets warm. The palm rest pad for the right hand side gets a little warm in quiet office mode and noticeably warm in high performance. Another downside is that sometimes it's easy to activate the shortcut options when using the touchpad (i.e. scrolling function).Overall this is a very good laptop. It looks nice. I've had it for a week so far and have no problems with it. It is very light to carry around especially since I commute to college with lots of other heavy things such as lunch, books, etc. Highly recommend this for those who do not want to pay for a macbook air or ultrabook and sacrifice performance in doing so while maintaining the thin and light weight requirement. If a back-lit keyboard is one of your priorities then this is not the laptop is not for you. No laptops are made perfect. The cons that I mentioned above, however, are not really a concern for me which is why I gave this a five star rating. In the future I'd probably upgrade this to 8gb of ram and with a SSD but even now I am very pleased with this laptop so far.

Excellent, cost-effective laptop, runs Linux well
By J. Schlosburg
I really like this laptop. I run Linux and use my laptop for primarily these purposes:*Programming*Web browsing*Occasional video watching on hulu or netflix*Occasional office applications*Occasional video gamingI had a 2nd-gen eeepc, then a third-gen eeepc, and now this. Of course this is an upgrade from the entire eeepc line, but I came at it as an avid eeepc user. If you had something similar to the 1215n, then you will find yourself right at home with this unit. It is very clearly an iteration on the same design, but with, off the top of my head, the following items fixed:*The rubber feet don't fall off after 10 minutes, or seem like they would fall off ever. Additionally, the rubber pads that separate the monitor from the palm rest are in the scren, instead of the main body, and appear to be held in place better*The top of case does not feel like it will become un-glued the way the 1215n did*The hinge covers do not appear that they can fall off as they eventually did in the 1215n*The case is made of metal. It may not be brushed aluminum, and the inside of the screen is glossy plastic, and the bottom is matte plastic, but other than that it is metal. Awesome. Feels great.*The battery locks more effectively*The screen, while it doesn't do a 180 like the second-gen eeepc, does angle further than the 1215nPerformance-wise, this unit is awesome. It's an i5, which is a massive upgrade from any atom. Applications are snappy and operating systems are very responsive. The video performance is fine as far as I can tell. Haven't had any problems with video, no matter the resolution. Gnome 3 animations are smooth, though Unity is meh, but that might just be Unity, as Win7, KDE, and Gnome 3 work great.Things to know when running Linux on this:I run Ubuntu 12.10 right now, and an essential install is Jupiter, which will manage your power settings, including the hybrid video and CPU throttling. I now get at least 7 hours with this installed. 100% necessary if you are running Linux. Another issue is that there is a bug with Intel's wifi drivers on both the 3.x kernel and the 2.x kernel. On 3.x, you will need to modify your wireless power management script as detailed here: [...]. I can confirm that this fix makes a very significant difference - wifi barely works without it while on battery. For a 2.x kernel, you apparently need to disable bluetooth for wifi to work properly, though I haven't tried an older kernel and can't confirm that this is still the case.SO, here we go, PROs:*Great case for the most part (see cons)*Great performance*Great battery life (at least with Linux + Jupiter, not sure about Windows)*Good Linux experience after a few modifications*Best bluetooth range I've ever encountered*Looks nice, very thin and sleek*Screen viewing angle is huge horizontally, vertically it's alright. Screen seems nice, thoughCONS:*Screen is really flexible, am worried about throwing this in a backpack with other stuff like I was used to with the eeepcs.*I have had more than a few bad sectors on the disk, including one right in the middle of Windows. It's a little disconcerting and I'm considering installing a different disk.*Powder coating on top of palm rest is already showing palm marks - expect shiny areas on front of the keyboard after a yearOverall I'm pleased with this device. If was transported back in time to when I was making my purchasing decision armed with the knowledge I have now, I would still buy this laptop.
