E6410, Docking Station, Business Use
By Tech Hound
My company provided the E6410 with a docking station at work and a large monitor. I use the laptop mostly at work, and take it home over the weekends.Only major drawback is not having HDMI port. It has a small 14" screen compared to my 17" Asus laptop, but this was provided as a business machine (hence the large monitor at work). Speakers are average, typically tinny, but decent volume. Battery is outstanding right now, but I expect it to radically decline in 'up time' performance (as all batteries still do). I've been on it right now for about 40 minutes and it shows "67% remaining". Screen brightness is automatically dimmed, though you can change it easily using the "Fn" + arrow keys. I also really like the backlit keys for night usage.Mine runs Windows XP (because Company is presently testing Windows 7 for enterprise-wide compatibility). It has an 512MB graphics card, I7 processor, 4GB RAM (wish it were 6GB), 230GB drive, 3 USB's and 1 USB/eSATA combo, 1 i1394 (firewire), 5 in 1 mem card reader, VGA (connect to a projector), and 1 other port I've not identified yet - it looks like an internal desktop SATA drive connector but I'm not sure. I would not say the i7 offers amazingly 'new' performance for opening applications, but XP may not be taking advantage of hardware advancements. I have no complaints about having many apps open at once, numerous tabs open in Internet Explorer, etc. XP is XP, so it crashes on occasion, but I do not attribute that to the hardware. I DID just notice the spacebard button squeeks... OH NO!!! Give the WHOLE laptop a ONE!!! Maybe WD40 is a good idea, eh?I have used laptops for about 15 years now, and consider this Dell Latitude a fine overall standard laptop in terms of performance, weight, storage, RAM, etc. I managed an IT department for 7 years and chose Dell Latitudes as the standard. We rarely had any problems except people would break the lid latch (or the latch was inferior let's say...). This one is new so I cannot rate reliability at this time, but it seems Dell puts strong effort into their reputation for the Latitude lne, since Business is the primary target audience.Another key consideration is parts and support, and as a business customer, Dell has been outstanding. I cannot comment too much on the non-business experience, but I have worked extensively with Dell employees and they have always been friendly and professional.
